Compassion and Advocacy
Compassion and advocacy are two essential traits that when cultivated together help make life better.
Compassion: n.
deep awareness of the suffering of others (or ourselves) that compels us to take action to alleviate the pain
Advocacy: n.
the act of speaking or pleading in favor of a person or cause; actively supporting
Most often we think about these traits as directed toward someone else. But here’s the thing about showing compassion and advocating for others: we’re better at both when we practice on ourselves.
When I’m compassionate toward myself - whether that means allowing all the emotions to wash over me without criticism, seeing my inadequacy as part of the shared human experience, or something else - I will have a greater capacity to extend that same compassion to my partner or colleague when they’re experiencing intense emotions.
When I advocate for my own needs - whether that means saying no, asking for help, allocating time for self-care, or something else - I will have greater awareness and courage to advocate for the needs of those around me.
Compassion and advocacy start in my own heart.
To notice today: Where might you need to show yourself compassion? What needs do you have? Are you advocating for yourself?
