Our Feelings Remember
Our emotions and memories are often deeply connected. When we reminisce about our awkward teenage years or maybe the first date with our partner, the sensations of those experiences come flooding back - whether hilarious, shameful, passionate, or tender.
Sometimes feeling those same emotions in a completely different context can bring up those past events. While we might try to block out certain memories, our feelings still remember.
Just like our brain, our emotions pattern match. They connect similar experiences across time and space as a sort of shortcut for helping us figure out what to expect and how to respond.
When we begin noticing this subconscious processing, we can learn from these connections.
What are the similarities?
What are the differences?
Is this comparison or pattern matching helpful for me?
If not, how might I change my current response or narrative around this event?
To notice today: What do your feelings remember?
